Why You're Still Stuck After Doing the Work: What Coaching, Therapy, and Nervous System Regulation Are Missing
If you have done the therapy, you've done the coaching, you've done the programs, and you're still finding yourself stuck at the same level, I want you to know that the problem is not you. And today, I'm going to tell you what it actually is, because I think the kindest thing I can do right now is to name it for you.Voiceover: Welcome to From Trauma to CEO: The Psychology of Transformational Success with Fariha Barles. This is a space for cycle-breakers, leaders, and visionaries who are ready to rewrite old patterns and rise into their full potential. Each episode explores the emotional, psychological, and identity-level shifts that turn lived experience into lasting, meaningful success. And now here's your host, Fariha Barles.
Fariha Barles: Hello, and welcome back to From Trauma to CEO.
So, I'm going to say something today that I've been wanting to talk about for a while, but I've been going back and forth because I don't want it to sound like I'm dismissing other people's work, and I certainly don't want to sound like I have all the answers. I do not have all the answers. I want to start there.
But, I do have 23 years of clinical experience, training across more modalities than most people know even exist.
And a front-row seat to what happens when people come to me after spending years and years, and thousands of pounds on approaches that gave them awareness, gave them language, gave them even a temporary momentum, but not really any lasting changes.
And at the end of the episode, I'm going to walk you through exactly where in the process most approaches stop, and what it actually takes to go further. Because I think once you see it, you'll, hopefully, stop blaming yourself, and that alone is worth the lesson.
So, here is what I observe. And I want to tell you this because I want to see if it sounds familiar, or if you're able to see yourself in that description. So, you might feel stuck. Something is not working in your business, in your leadership, and your capacity to grow. And you go ahead and you invest in a program, and, or invest in a coaching, or even therapy. And the program is good. It really is good. And it gives you a language. It gives you insight. Maybe it gives you even a community of people who understand.
And for a period, weeks, sometimes even months, things shift. You feel different. You see things differently. And then, you finally have momentum.
And then, the old pattern comes back. Maybe not all at once, maybe it just creeps—the same income ceiling, the same avoidance around visibility, the same cycle where you push hard, then collapse, and then push again. And then you look at yourself and you think, "What is wrong with me that this keeps happening? I did the work. I understood the pattern. Why am I back here again?"
And so, you invest again. Another program, another modality, another framework.
And again, you'll get more awareness, more language, more momentum. But, can I be honest about something? The question, "What is wrong with me?" is the wrong question. But, nobody gives you the right ones. Maybe nobody has given you the right one, not yet, anyway.
I want to tell you something that I have not said publicly, maybe, before because I think it matters for what I'm about to teach you.
I trained across seven therapeutic modalities—from CBT, Person-Centred, Existential, Psychodynamic, EMDR, Mindfulness, Gestalt—many different ones. And for years, I was even confused by my own training because in each modality I would learn something real, something that genuinely worked for certain clients in certain moments.
And then, I would encounter a client where it did not work. Where the CBT shifted the thought—CBT is cognitive behavioral therapy, and it mainly works with your thought patterns and then followed by behavior. And so, you know, I see that sometimes it works, and it does shift the thinking process, but the body is still not on board. Or, maybe, I worked with psychodynamic approach, and it gave me a deep understanding about the person, but then, the person could still not act much differently. And I've seen where somatic work released something in a body, but the identity stayed exactly the same.
And I started to wonder if the problem was to do with me, or maybe, I wasn't skilled enough, or if I had not trained deeply enough, or if there was some modality that I haven't found yet that would be the answer.
And I say this because it's important, because it took me years to realize that the problem was not me, and it was not the modalities. The problem was that each one addressed one layer, and left the others untouched.
And, to be honest, any lasting change that we are looking for does not live in one layer alone.
So, I only started seeing truly lasting, transformational results when I stopped choosing between modalities and I started combining them. When we worked at the level of belief, identity, trauma, inherited patterns, nervous system, and basically, mind-body and growth all together. And only then, it moved into aligned action, and into leadership.
So, this is where the method came from. So, the method is my framework that I created. It didn't come from a desire to create a brand, or just come up with the framework, I assure you. But, it was created from a frustration of watching intelligent, capable people blame themselves for the limitations of incomplete approaches.
And, I was one of them. I was also confused. I was also wondering why my training was not giving me the full picture. And when I found the combination, and when I added my own understanding, and my own experience into it, everything changed—for my clients, and also, for me.
So, let me walk you through this because once you see where each approach stops, then you will understand why the pattern keeps returning.
So, I'm sure you've heard of mindset work. I mean, it's very popular, especially in the coaching industry. And mindset work is not useless, okay? I want to be clear about that because understanding your beliefs, challenging your thoughts, rewriting your narratives, they all have values, and it's a real layer. But, for many high achievers, that's not the layer where the real pattern actually lives.
You can change a belief. You can write a new affirmation. You can set an intention with absolute conviction, and your nervous system can override all of that in a heartbeat. Because the nervous system doesn't respond to beliefs; it responds to safety. And if your system was calibrated in an environment where expansion was dangerous, let me assure you, no belief will change, or will be sufficient to override that.
I've seen that many, many times. People who can articulate their pattern with extraordinary precision, and still, will repeat them.
And again, you know, this is where it's important to acknowledge, you have the awareness, they have the awareness, and the awareness is not wrong, but the awareness without the nervous system work is like having a map but no vehicle, right?
And now, what I'm going to talk about, this is where it gets a little bit annoying, I suppose, because—and I have talked about this before, but today, I want to like, take it further—then we have the nervous system regulation which, again, it's very popular, and every other person is talking about it, and I was speaking to a friend of mine the other day and she said, "Oh my god, I've seen, I've just watching going through the TikTok." And she said, "I see these 20-something-year-olds like, teaching nervous system regulation." Now, there is no problem with that, but it's... well, actually, there is a lot of problem with that. I'm going to be honest, because you cannot touch nervous system work if you don't have an in-depth understanding of the source of how to use it, of where and when it's going to be appropriate or helpful for each individual. You can't just go ahead and get one, or two, or three tools and then apply to everyone.
It can actually become dangerous, after a while.
So, right now, what I'm seeing is that regulation is being positioned as the complete solution right now, right? "Regulate your nervous system and everything else will follow. Calm the activation and the success will come."
But, this is what I'm watching happen, and this is something I have been seeing constantly with the people I work with.
A person feels activation before a bold decision, before a big decision. They want to increase their prices, ask for that promotion, a visibility move, a conversation that really matters, right? And instead of examining what that activation is about—you know, "Why am I being activated?", "What is it protecting?", "What identity it is defending?", and "What inherited programming it is running?"—they run to try to regulate it. Okay? They are trying to calm it down. Okay, let's breathe through it. And then, the activation passes.
But, so does the moment.
And that bold decision, that big decision that can actually move the needle in your business, in your work, on your life, that will not get to be made.
And consequently, the prices will not go up, the conversation doesn't happen, but then, the person feels calm, right? They feel regulated, and they confuse that calm for progress.
And you can be deeply regulated and still be capped at the same level you have been for years. Regulation without identity work is maintenance, right? It's not transformation. And I think that distinction does change everything.
And then, there is the other side. There is the therapy side, there is the healing side. And I say this with enormous respect because it is the world that I came from. But, I have watched people become professional healers for themselves.
They become experts at their own wounds. They can narrate the whole history with extraordinary insight.
And they understand their attachment patterns, their family dynamic, their core wounds. They can explain themselves to anybody with such amazing awareness.
And they are living at maybe 20% of their capacity. Brilliant people playing a small in every area of their lives. Not because they don't understand themselves, because clearly, we've established that they do, but because nobody ever connected the understanding to the expansion, okay? Nobody ever said, "Okay, now that you see the pattern, what do you want to build? How does your nervous system, or what does your nervous system need in order to hold it? What do you want? What is your desire? How good can your life get now that you see these patterns?"
And, healing, in my opinion, healing without expansion is maintenance. Expansion without healing is just decoration. It's, you know, it's on the surface stuff, right? And both are incomplete.
And, the industry, as it currently exists, it largely makes you choose between them. And that is the depth problem that I am naming today. With the coaching industry, with the self-development industry, and with the therapy industry, as well.
So, if you're recognizing your own experience right now, so if you recognize the program that helped you a little bit or gave you awareness but it did not convert into lasting change, I want you to sit with this question.
At what level does my pattern actually live?
Is it a belief? Is it an identity? Is it inherited program, or is it a nervous system set point? And has anybody actually ever worked with me on these levels?
And, I suspect the answer is going to be no. Because if the answer is no, that changes everything, because it means the potential is not gone. It just has not been met at the right level yet.
So, I said at the start that if you've done the work, if you have done all the stuff and all the work and all the things that you needed to do and you still feeling stuck, that the problem is not you. And, I really hope that you can hear that differently now. Because if you understand that, that will change everything for you. If you understand that you're not the problem and that it's, the problem is the a structural reality that we are facing, that, you know, that there are some aspects or layers of your growth that it hasn't been touched, then, hopefully, you get to understand yourself, your potential to grow, your ability to succeed, much differently.
You're not a hard case, okay? And, you're definitely not somebody who cannot be helped. You are somebody whose patterns live at the depth that most available approaches, most coaching work or programs, or even therapy at times, simply do not reach.
And, every piece of work that you have done has given you something—awareness, language, community, tools—and none of it was wasted.
It was all building towards the moment where you're ready for the depth that actually holds. And if that moment is now, I'm here.
So, if you're the person who has invested in programs, done the therapy, tried coaching, and you're still hitting the same ceiling, the problem is not you, my dear, the problem is the level at which the work is being done.
And the method, by myself, was built for exactly that.
The Method by Fariha Barles is my signature group program—12 weeks of deep, live structured work where we go underneath the belief, the identity, the inherited patterns, nervous system architecture, everything. And, we look at what's actually holding these patterns in place. And then, and only then, we move into aligned action and embodied leadership. And it is the only program I know that combines this level of clinical depth with real-world business expansion. And, it is opening soon.
So, if you want to find out whether the method is the right fit for you or where you are right now, start with the Hidden Success Pattern Audit, which is, I will leave that in the show notes. It's where we begin to identify what is actually running your business decisions, what's running your success patterns. And, if you want to have a direct conversation about the program, you can book a breakthrough conversation with me, and I'll leave all the details in the show notes. And, I would love to hear from you.
And as always, follow, review, and share this episode with somebody who needs to hear it.
I will see you in the next one.

Episode Summary
If you've invested in therapy, coaching, courses, and personal development but still find yourself repeating the same patterns, this episode will help you understand why. Farya Barlas explains that lasting transformation doesn't come from a single approach because human behavior operates across multiple layers. Drawing on more than two decades of clinical experience, she explores why mindset, nervous system regulation, and healing each have value, but real, sustainable change happens when they are integrated rather than treated as separate solutions.
What You'll Learn
Why awareness alone is not enough to create lasting transformation, even after years of therapy, coaching, or personal development.
How mindset work, nervous system regulation, and traditional healing each address different layers of personal growth, but often leave deeper patterns untouched.
Why recurring challenges in business, leadership, and personal success are often rooted in identity, inherited programming, and subconscious survival patterns.
How understanding where your patterns actually live can help you stop blaming yourself and focus on the work that creates sustainable change.
Why integrating belief work, identity, trauma, nervous system capacity, and aligned action creates a stronger foundation for long-term success and embodied leadership.
